The Detroit Summer Live Arts Media Project is a group of youth, artists and activists in Detroit, using visual media and hip hop arts to transform themselves and the city of Detroit. In the summer of 2006 they created the hip hop audio documentary, Rising Up From the Ashes: Chronicles of a Drop Out, which used peer-interviews, poetry and rap to investigate the root causes of Detroit's over-50% drop-out rate. This summer they will take the project to the next level by creating "docu-music videos" around many of the same issues explored in Rising Up From the Ashes.

They will work with acclaimed video artists-- Joe Namy and Diana Nucera as artist mentors. The program will involve in-depth exploration of both artistic technique and the social landscape of the city. The program will run from 9:00am - 4:00pm Monday thru Friday July 14th - 26th. A public screening of the rough cuts will take place Friday August 1st at 7:00pm at the 555 Gallery.
